BGS have received many reports from residents in Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and West Midlands of the event being felt, mainly from within around 30 km of the epicentre, with the majority coming from the ST postcode areas. Reports described "an initial rumbling then a bang", "felt more like a shunt, like something had hit something", "we felt one sudden bang like thud and we were physically moved in our chairs" and "initial bang that sounded like something large falling over upstairs but continued with the ceiling vibrating".

Macroseismic

Macroseismic intensities (EMS) calculated in 5 km grid squares from 140 felt reports. A minimum of five observations are needed to calculate an intensity. If there are less than five then the value is given as "felt". "not felt" means that reports explicitly stating that nothing was felt have been received.
