We have received around 50 online reports of the earthquake being felt in Bicknacre, Runwell, (South) Woodham Ferrers, Chelmsford and surrounding areas, mainly from within approximately 15 km of the epicentre. Reports described, "was like an underground train underneath our bungalow", "was awoken by a loud bang and rumble", "felt like piece of large furniture had fallen over" and "thought it was nearby roadworks". This is an area that has experienced little seismicity in both the historical and instrumental periods, with only six events located within a 50 km radius of this event. One of these events was the magnitude 4.6 ML Colchester earthquake on 22 April 1884, one of the most damaging UK earthquakes.

Macroseismic

Macroseismic intensities (EMS) calculated in 5 km grid squares from 48 felt reports. A minimum of five observations are needed to calculate an intensity. If there are less than five then the value is given as "felt". "not felt" means that reports explicitly stating that nothing was felt have been received.
