Reports described, "was like an underground train underneath our bungalow", "was awoken by a loud bang and rumble", "felt like piece of large furniture had fallen over" and "thought it was nearby roadworks". This is an area that has experienced little seismicity in both the historical and instrumental periods, with only six events located within a 50 km radius of this event. One of these events was the magnitude 4.6 ML Colchester earthquake on 22 April 1884, one of the most damaging UK earthquakes.
